Agile at Scale: What Works, What Doesn't, and What Everyone Gets Wrong

Scaling agile across large organizations is one of the most common and most frequently botched IT transformation initiatives. Here's an honest assessment.

Every large organization wants to be agile. Decades of evidence show that small, cross-functional teams operating with autonomy, fast feedback, and iterative delivery consistently outperform large, siloed organizations operating in waterfall mode. The challenge is that most organizations are large and siloed, and the mechanisms for translating team-level agility to organizational-level agility are genuinely hard.

Frameworks Are Not the Answer

The enterprise agile scaling framework market — SAFe, LeSS, Scrum@Scale, Spotify Model — has produced more confusion than clarity. Organizations frequently adopt a framework wholesale, run expensive training programs, rename their departments, and then discover that nothing has fundamentally changed. Frameworks are at best a starting point for thinking; at worst, they become bureaucratic overlays that preserve waterfall dynamics while adding agile terminology.
